Celine Dion is getting candid about her health struggles and battle with Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS). The music icon who was diagnosed with the rare autoimmune disorder in 2022 which led to the cancellation of her Courage World Tour said how it feels to sing with this condition. In a new clip from her upcoming interview with the Today show’s Hoda Kotb, the singer was seen describing the effects the syndrome made on her vocal cords. So, let’s check what kinds of difficulties the singer is going through.
Celine Dion said while singing she feels like being strangled for her condition
The 56-year-old said in the interview, “It’s like somebody’s strangling you. It’s like somebody’s pushing your larynx this way.”
The “My Heart Will Go On” singer moreover describes that the condition causes parts of her body to spasm. Therefore, its effects have been so intense that it has resulted in a broken rib.
“It can be in the abdominal. It can be in the spine, in the ribs. But it feels like if I point my feet, it will stay in it,” Dion noted. “Or if I cook, my fingers or my hands will get in position. It’s cramping, but it’s like you’re in the position of you cannot unlock them.”
Later on she explains although the disease is”chronic and progressive” there are medicines available to help manage it.
As per the Mayo Clinic, Stiff Person Syndrome is “a rare disorder of motor function characterized by involuntary stiffness of axial muscles and superimposed painful muscle spasms, which are often induced by startle or emotional stimuli.”
Dion recently documented her health journey in the new Prime Video docuseries, I Am: Celine Dion. The first trailer for the docu-series was released last month.
The singer said in the trailer, “It’s not hard to do a show, you know? It’s hard to cancel a show. I’m working hard every day but I have to admit, it’s been a struggle. I miss it so much, the people, I miss them. If I can’t run, I’ll walk. If I can’t walk, I’ll crawl. But I won’t stop.”
Needless to say, it’ll be extremely exciting for her fans to experience the depth of her through this docuseries.
I Am: Celine Dion will start streaming from June 25 on Prime Video.
