Indian bassist Mohini Dey who is known for her technical brilliance gained immense popularity for her incredible talent within a short span of time. Starting her career in 2023 she has been part of Gaan Bangla’s Wind of Change and Coke Studio India. Moreover, she also has worked with Oscar-winning musician A. R. Rahman. Despite having little time in the business she has collaborated with top global artists with Steve Vai, Marco Minnemann, Jordan Rudess of Dream Theater, Jason Richardson, Dewa Budjana, Zakir Hussain, Sivamani, A. R. Rahman, and Willow Smith. So let’s take a look at the incredible journey of this talented young woman.
Life and Journey of Mohini Dey
Born and brought up in Mumbai to Bengali parents, her musician father discovered her potential for music just at the age of 3. From a young age, she took inspiration from her musician mother Romia Dey, a classical Hindustani singer, and her father Sujoy Dey who was also a jazz fusion bass guitarist. Receiving her first Fender Jazz Bass guitar at the age of 9 her incredible talent and unwavering support from her parents make her dream more stronger.
The 28-year-old’s talent is also recognized on the stage of Bangladeshi music channel Gaan Bangla’s popular reality show Wind of Change. Moreover, her constant appearance in Coke Studio India made her spot secure in the Indian music industry.
Fluent in Marathi, Hindi, Bengali, and English she tied the knot with saxophonist Mark Hartsuch.
Mohini Dey’s Journey Toward Success
In 2023, Her hard work paid off with her self-titled debut album. Later on, she also created a band named MaMoGi along with her husband Mark Hartsuch, and drummer Gino Banks.
She came into the limelight after she got the invitation to join Willow Smith’s new band which she announced on the set of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in New York.
At the same time, she also gave a magnificent performance in NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert.
Having collaborated with the prominent international sensations Steve Vai, Marco Minnemann, Jordan Rudess of Dream Theater, and Jason Richardson, as well as Indian legends Dewa Budjana, Zakir Hussain, Sivamani, and A. R. Rahman has become a well-known name in both East and West.
