Indian Olympic Association President PT Usha revealed the Chief Medical Officer appointed by IOA, Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala is not to be blamed for Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Indian wrestler had to back off from the women’s freestyle 50 kg gold medal final due to being 100 grams overnight.
President PT Usha has finally spoken up against the controversy noting that the coach and support staff should be held accountable for the wrestler’s unfortunate fate at the quadrennial event. In the statement IOA noted that in the sports like boxing, wrestling, weightlifting and judo, the coaching team is the prime responsible for the weight management of the athletes. In the comprehensive statement shared by IOA, said, ‘IOA had sent a medical team a few months before to discuss the recovery and management of injuries to be suffered by athletes before and after their competitions, as well as to cover for some athletes who did not have their nutrition assistant and physiotherapists.”
The statement continued, “The whole accusation charge on the team from IOA, specifically citing Dr. Pardiwala is ill-minded, and it must not be taken lightly. It is hoped that all those rushing to condemn the IOA medical team will take into account all the facts before coming to any conclusions.’
Vinesh Phogat’s appeal for joint silver
The 29-year-old has made two appeals in front of Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) which were the review of her ineligibility at the tournament and the consideration for a joint silver medal. Although the first appeal was rejected the court accepted the second one.
Day after her disqualification Vinesh has officially announced her retirement from the wrestling career.
Despite the heartbreak, she created history by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the final of Olympics. Moreover, she also defeated the reigning champion Y. Susaki of Japan by a 3-2 margin.
The verdict of the appeal is yet to be passed. For now, it’s a matter of time until Vinesh’s journey in 2024 ends with a silver or heartbreak.
