Veteran Singer Usha Uthup who has been reigning in the Indian music industry for more than five decades reflects on the struggles of the initial days of her career. The singer was felicitated with several awards and recognition including the prestigious Padma Bhushan which is the third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India. However, this enormous glory has cost her some unforgettable bad memories as well. In a recent interview, the music icon has looked back at her incredible career. Usha Uthup said she was judged for her looks
The 76-year-old singer gave music lovers some timeless classics like ‘Ramba Ho Ho’, ‘Hari Om Hari’, ‘Koi Yahan Aha’, ‘One Two Cha Cha Cha’, and ‘Darling’ among others.
With the entry of Uthup the Indian music industry has introduced a new flavor of music which has a blend of jazz, western pop, and R&B. However, it ain’t been easy for the Legend to leave her mark in the industry. Starting as a nightclub singer in 1969 she has endured immense skepticism and obstacles due to her appearance and the orthodox mentality of the society.
Usha ji recalled in the interview, “Being a trailblazer is both an honor and a responsibility. Reflecting on my journey, I recall starting as a nightclub singer in 1969 and facing skepticism due to my appearance.”
She added, “The reaction from the audience was mixed, but their perceptions changed once they heard my voice. This experience taught me the importance of perseverance and staying true to oneself. If my journey inspires others, especially women, to pursue their dreams despite challenges, I consider that a profound achievement. The evolving landscape of music today is filled with opportunities, and I am grateful to have contributed to paving the way for future generations.”

The honorary Padma Bhushan awardee said of her inspiring legacy, “My enduring legacy is a result of staying authentic and true to my craft. Over the years, I’ve always strived to be myself and to give my best in every performance”.
She also shared a great piece of advice for the aspiring singer noting, “It’s essential to know your audience and what resonates with them while staying true to your strengths. The journey is also about adapting and embracing change when necessary, but always with integrity and honesty. It’s a continuous process of learning and growing, and I am thankful for the support and love from my audience that has made this possible.”
