Around 10,000 migrants gathered under the US-Mexico border bridge causing the humanitarian crisis to rise even more.

The bridge connects Del Rio in Texas to Mexico’s Ciudad Acuña.

Moreover, the temporary camp present there has grown with an astounding speed in current days.

A lot of migrants especially Haitian, who have crossed the Rio Grande, are sleeping under the bridge in filthy conditions.

According to the US government, there has been a surge of migrants at the border.

The government data shows – the number of migrants held at the US-Mexico border in July surpassed 200,000 for the first time in 21 years.

In the previous month, the authorities arrested more than 195,000 migrants at Mexico’s border.

The numbers represent a momentous rise from the 51,000 arrested in August 2019.

The temporary camp has few basic services, and migrants waiting in temperatures of 37C (99F) are said to be going back to Mexico to get supplies.

These people are mostly Haitians accompanied by some Cubans, Venezuelans and Nicaraguans – reports say.

The Washington Post reports – Haitians in large numbers headed north, some arrived in Brazil and other South American countries after the earthquake in 2010.

According to Del Rio Mayor Bruno Lozano, more than 10,500 migrants were under the Del Rio International Bridge as of Thursday evening.

Ramses Colon, a 41-year-old Afro-Cuban refuge seeker said the Del Rio camp was “chaos”.

“You stand there among thousands with your little ticket waiting for your turn,” he told the Washington Post.

People received tickets with numbers while they wait to be processed.

In a statement, the border patrol said that it will be increasing the staff in Del Rio to enable a “safe, humane and orderly process”.

“To prevent injuries from heat-related illness, the shaded area underneath Del Rio International Bridge is serving as a temporary staging site while migrants wait to be taken into USBP [US Border Patrol] custody,” it added.

It further added that portable toilets, towels and drinking water have been provided.

However, President Joe Biden has created a task force to reunite migrant children with their families.

He also put a pause on the construction of Donald Trump’s border wall and called for reviews of legal immigration programmes ended by his predecessor.
