Jinger Duggar Vuolo opened up about her religious childhood. The actress shared her childhood memories of growing up in a household devoted to the Institute in Basic Life Principles. The institution was founded by Minister Bill Gothard. On 18th January, talking with the People magazine Counting On star reflected on the memories.
Jinger Duggar Vuolo said the religious teachings are very harmful
On January 18, during an interview with People magazine, the 29-year-old talked about the ‘harmful’ teachings of the religious institution her family followed. She shared,”[Gothard’s] teachings were so harmful, and I’m seeing more of the effects of that in the lives of my friends and people who grew up in that community with me. There are a lot of cult-like tendencies.”
Jinger also added, “[Gothard’s] teachings, in a nutshell, are based on fear and superstition and leave you in a place where you feel like, ‘I don’t know what God expects of me. The fear kept me crippled with anxiety. I was terrified of the outside world.”
The actress also recalled a time when she and her family went to play broomball. She revealed, “I thought I could be killed in a car accident on the way. because I didn’t know if God wanted me to stay home and read my Bible instead.”
Vuolo 2017 first started to question her belief system. However, in the present day, she is still a Christian. However, now she has a different approach to living out her faith which is fully separated from IBLP.
In 2014, Bill Gothard, the founder of the institute was accused of molesting and sexually harassing women in the organization. Gothard also shared a statement at that time on the issue. The since-deleted statement on his website follows: “My actions of holding of hands, hugs, and touching of feet or hair with young ladies crossed the boundaries of discretion and were wrong.”
