India finally got its official film to send at the 2025 Oscars. Kiran Rao’s directorial venture Laapataa Ladies marked India’s official entry at the auspicious annual event leaving behind 29 films from the list, including Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal. Laapataa Ladies Oscar entry was announced today by The Film Federation of India
On September 23, the announcement was made official. The Film Federation of India headed by Assamese director Jahnu Barua and including 13 members has organized a special event in Chennai where Laapata Ladies has been chosen to represent India on the global platform. The movie will compete in the Best Foreign Film Category 97th Academy Awards.
This is indeed a big moment for the film’s creators since it has completed with blockbusters like Animal starring Ranbir Kapoor, Malayalam National Award winner Aattam, Cannes Film Festival winner All We Imagine As Light, Tamil film Maharaja, Telugu titles Kalki 2898 AD, and Hanu-Man, along with Swatantraya Veer Savarkar of Randeep Hooda and Yami Gautam’s Article 370.

After the announcement of the news Kiran Rao expressed her happiness in an official statement.
Rao shared, “I am deeply honored and beyond delighted that our film Laapataa Ladies has been chosen as India’s official entry to the Academy Awards. Moreover, she expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the selection committee for this moment a “great privilege” as it has been selected among some “amazing Indian films.” She also shared her gratitude to her ex-husband Aamir Khan’s production house and Jio Studios for giving her the chance to show her vision.
She concluded her note by thanking the cast and crew and also adding, “Thank you once again for this incredible honor. We look forward to taking this journey ahead with great enthusiasm.”
Laapataa Ladies marked the second directorial venture of Kiran after 2010-released Dhobi Ghat.
