Balenciaga officially cut ties with rapper Kanye West amid his controversial comments about George Floyd’s death. On the October 15 episode of the Drink Champs podcast West made the controversial comment. On October 21 in a statement, Kering, Balenciaga’s parent company, said, ” Balenciaga has no longer any relationship nor any plans for future projects related to this artist.”
Why did Balenciaga break off the partnership with West?
Controversies don’t seem to leave Kanye West. The reason behind ending their business isn’t revealed yet. However, it can assume it is because of the 45-year-old continuously involved with controversy.
The incident comes after West ended his agreement with the fashion brand Gap. His lawyer said, “no choice but to terminate their collaboration agreement because of GAP’s substantial noncompliance.”
Moreover, on October 6, Adidas placed its decade-long alliance with the Yeezy brand “under review”.
Kanye’s comment on George Floyd’s death
On the 15th October episode of the podcast The Drink Champs the Yeezy owner made the statement. He said that George Floyd’s death was from fentanyl use and not by Derek Chauvin. Chauvin, the former Minneapolis officer allegedly murdered the 46-year-old in 2021.
Later on, following West’s comments Floudy’s family and his 7-year-old daughter are planning to sue West for $250 million in damages. Their attorney Nuru Witherspoon said,” The interests of the child are a priority. George Floyd’s daughter is being retraumatized by Kanye West’s comments and he’s creating an unsafe and unhealthy environment for her.”
The 24-time Grammy winner has been in a good relationship with Balenciaga’s creative director Demna Gvasalia.
On October 9th, Twitter and Meta locked West’s accounts for violating the rules. Moreover, he has been also bashed by Supermodel Gigi Hadid for his comment against Gabriella Karefa-Johnson. “You have no idea haha…. If there’s actually a point to any of your s–t. She might be the only person that could save u. As if the ‘honor’ of being invited to your show should keep someone from giving their opinion? Lol. You’re a bully and a joke.”- the supermodel wrote under his Instagram post.
