Bradley Cooper didn’t have any “Hangovers” for 19 years. The actor appeared in the recent episode of Running Wild with Bear Grylls: The Challenge where he talked about his long sobriety journey. Moreover, he also revealed how his journey impacted his 2018 role as an addicted musician in the Academy-nominated film “A Star is Born.”
Bradley Cooper said he got sober at 29 years old
The 48-year-old actor reflected on his almost 20 years of journey without any drugs and alcohol. The actor said at the show, “I was lucky. I got sober at 29 years old, and I’ve been sober for 19 years. I’ve been very lucky.”
Moreover, he also revealed how his journey impacted his 2018 role as an addicted musician in the Academy-nominated film “A Star is Born.” The oscar-nominee said, “It made it easier to be able to really enter in there. And thank goodness I was at a place in my life where I was at ease with all of that, so I could really let myself go. “I’ve been very lucky with the roles I’ve had to play. It’s been a real blessing. I hope I get to keep doing it.”
However, this isn’t the first time Cooper reflected on his journey to sobriety last year, during his appearance on the Smartless podcast he also shared some insights on his addiction. The actor who shares daughter Lea, 6, with ex Irina Shayk opened up about his cocaine addiction. However, thanks to his longtime friend Arrested Development star Will Arnett he is on the right path. He also shared that Arnett had “a hard conversation with me that put me on a path of deciding to change my life.”
Apart from that, the Silver Linings Playbook alum recalled the moment he realizes his addiction problem. In 2004 he and Will attended a play where he thinks his actions were “so funny” to the other guests until Will told him that he was a “real asshole” at that time.
The Hangover star said, “That was the first time I ever realized I had a problem with drugs and alcohol. I’ll just never forget it. The guy that I think is doing ‘mean humour’ is telling me the truth about it.”
However, thanks to his little daughter ” Every single thing is absolutely shaded or brought out in glorious colours.” he added fatherhood is the “absolute greatest thing.”
