BRITs Awards 2021 was held on Tuesday, May 11 in London. It welcomed over 4,000 people as a live audience. This made it the first-ever major indoor music event to be held in London in over a year.
After such a long time, there was a celebration for which the audience did not have to wear masks or follow social distancing.
Britain’s pop music honours, took place at the O2 Arena on the river Thames as the country emerges from COVID-19 lockdown.
This ceremony is a part of the British government’s Events Research Programme. It is aimed at establishing whether big events can be held in closed environments without social distancing.
The guests also comprised of 2,500 key workers. They sat in rows facing towards the two stages. One stage was for the presenters and the other was for performers.
The singer-songwriter Taylor Swift made history as she became the first female, non-UK artist to be awarded the Global Icon honour at the BRITs awards 2021.
Before Taylor could accept the award, a short video featuring her bestie Selena Gomez, Annie Lennox, Zoë Kravitz, and Ed Sheeran played out.
While accepting the award Taylor said that it was an “incredible honour” to receive this title.
“I’m really proud to be a part of this musical community especially in a year when we all needed music so much,” Swift, who travelled to London for the awards, said, also paying tribute to frontline workers.
Dua Lipa on the other hand earned two awards for herself- female solo artist and album for “Future Nostalgia”. She told the audience that her performance was dedicated to key workers.
“I feel very grateful to be sharing this evening with them,” she told.
Some of the performances were live, which included those of Dua Lipa, Parks and Olivia Rodrigo. While other performances were pre-recorded.
The award for British single was won by Harry Styles, for “Watermelon Sugar”. Little Mix became the first female band to win the British group.
