Cannes 2024: Check Out the 7 Indian Movies That Will Be Screened At The 77th Cannes Film Festival

The 77th annual Cannes Film Festival began this Tuesday, May 14. Regarded as one of the most prestigious and celebrated film festivals in the world, it showcases a wide range of films from various genres and countries, including feature films, documentaries, and short films. The annual event which is held in Cannes, France is also felicitating Indian talent. 

Featuring several sections, including the Official Selection, which includes films competing for the Palme d’Or, the festival’s highest prize, and, special screenings, competition screenings, and sidebars such as the Directors’ Fortnight and Critics’ Week. Apart from this Film Festival also hosts several press conferences, industry events, and parties which give numerous opportunities to filmmakers, producers, distributors, and other professionals in the film industry to promote their films internationally. All We Imagine As Light by Payal Kapadia

Becoming the first Indian film in 30 years ever by an Indian female director to be screened under the main segment Palme d’Or of the prestigious film gala. 

Santosh by Sandhya Suri

Featuring Shahana Goswami as the lead role, the heartwarming story of a newly rural widowed Indian woman inheriting her husband’s job as a police constable.

Sunflowers Were The First Ones To Know by Chidananda S Naik 

Made by FTII student Chidanand Naik, this 15-minute short film has been selected for the Cinéfondation or La Cinef section of the Cannes Film Festival.

Manthan by Shyam Benegal

Shyam Benegal’s critically acclaimed movie Manthan starring Girish Karnad, Smita Patil, Naseeruddin Shah, and Kulbhushan Kharbanda is all set to screen under the Cannes Classics selection.

Sister Midnight by Karan Kandhari

Set in Mumbai, this dark comedy starring Radhika Apte has been selected under the Directors’ Fortnight (Quinzaine des cinéastes) category at the Cannes Film Festival 2024.

In Retreat by Maisam Ali

This film is directed by none other than Maisam Ali under the ACID (Association for the Distribution of Independent Cinema) section which has been depicting and promoting independent cinema since the early 1990s.

Shameless by Konstantin Bojanov

Helmed by Bulgarian director Konstantin Bojanov, Shameless depicts the story of Renuka who takes shelter in a northern India community of sex workers after killing a cop in a Delhi brothel. Later on, she falls for 17-year-old Devika despite facing countless drawbacks and difficulties. This film is entirely shot in India.
