Sometimes, when you don’t drink enough water to replenish the water lost through urination, sweating, you enter a state of dehydration.

Being dehydrated is not good for your body. It not only makes you feel thirsty but also damages your entire body functions.

How much water one should drink in a day?

You’ve probably heard about drinking eight glasses of water a day. But the number varies from person to person.

According to experts Children and older adults require more water to stay hydrated. People with cardiovascular diseases also need to drink more.

If you are sweating, you’re also more prone to dehydration.

Hence, listen to your body and drink water when you feel thirsty. Even before, during and after doing physical activity.

Maintain a diet full of hydrating foods like fruits and vegetables is another way to replenish lost fluids.

Symptoms of dehydration

Thirst

About 2% of our body is already dehydrated when we feel thirsty. So, try grabbing a glass of water as soon as possible.

If you will wait, then you’ll slowly become more dehydrated, especially while doing any physical activity.

Dry mouth

This is another way for your body to indicate a lack of water. Your body can’t make adequate saliva if it doesn’t have enough fluids.

Dark or tea-coloured urine

The more amount of water present in your body, the clearer the urine is. If its colour is dark then it means the urine is more concentrated.

Therefore, it’s a sign for you to drink more water.

Decrease in urination

Our body removes waste from the blood in the form of urine with the help of kidneys.

Therefore, if there is not enough water for your kidneys then you won’t urinate as frequently.

Instead, you’ll keep that waste in your body, and if you’re regularly dehydrated, it can cause more serious problems over time like kidney stones.

This will further harm every major system in your body including your heart, brain and lungs.

Dry skin

If your skin is drier than usual don’t just apply a moisturizer. It is an indication that your body needs water.

This is because our skin is the body’s largest organ and so it needs the right amount of blood supply to function.

Low blood pressure

A large amount of blood in the body is plasma, the liquid part. It is made up of water, protein, and salt.

If there is not enough water in plasma, your blood will become more concentrated. Thus, it will be difficult for it to flow through the body to the organs.

Muscle cramping

Because your blood is more concentrated, its volume drops. So, when you don’t hydrate properly your body takes drastic measures.

At that time your body transports blood to the most important part that needs it the most. And that body part is obviously the heart.

Thus, inadequate blood flow to muscles causes those muscle cramps.
