Two-time Academy Award-winning actress Emma Stone who was recently credited as Emily Jean Stone on bestie Taylor Swift’s new album ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ revealed why it is so nice to be called by her birth name. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, while conversing about her role in Showtime’s The Curse, Stone talked about her name preference in response to a comment by co-star Nathan Fielder. Let’s check out the complete details of this interview.
Emma Stone said she would like to be Emily
During the interview Emma’s co-star Nathan Fielder said, “Her name’s Emily, but she goes by Emma professionally. So when there’s people that don’t know her, I end up saying, Emma. But I’m going to just say Emily from here on.”
To which she responded, “You can say Emma. You can say anything.”
Later on, she said in response to the question if anyone in the industry has called her by her real name. “When I get to know them, people that I work with do,” she explained. “It’s just because my name was taken [by another actress in the Screen Actors Guild]. Then I freaked out a couple years ago. For some reason, I was like, ‘I can’t do it anymore. Just call me Emily.'”
Moreover, she noted that Fielder calls her “Em,” making things “easier” before admitting, “That would be so nice. I would like to be Emily.”
In 2018 during her appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Stone revealed that she has chosen her stage name Emma in honor of her favorite Spice Girl, Emma Bunton.
“I was super blonde, and my real name is Emily, but I wanted to be called Emma because of Baby Spice and guess what, now I am,” Stone quipped. “So, that’s pretty messed up.”
The Poor Things actress also added, “It wasn’t necessarily because of her, but yes, in second grade, did I go up to the teacher and ask her to call me Emma, yes I did. And was it because of Emma Lee Bunton from the Spice Girls? Yes it was.”
Last week, fans pointed out that the La La Land actress was referred to as Emily Jean Stone in the liner notes for her good friend Taylor Swift’s 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department.
The actress is credited for providing “Oddities” on the album’s eighth track, “Florida!!!” (featuring Florence + the Machine).
