Indian para shooter Avani Lekhara creates history by becoming the first Indian to win two consecutive gold medals in the ongoing Paralympics. On Friday, the 2024 Paris 2024 Paralympics the rifle shooter created a new Paralympics record in the women’s 10m air rifle with standing SH1 event. This is the third Paralympic medal and second gold for Lekhara. She became the first woman to claim back-to-back gold in the prestigious event and also the first Indian to have the honor. Highlights Of The Thrilling Paralympics event
Lekhara incredibly snatched the gold medal in a dramatic final to successfully defend her Tokyo title. In fact, there were two Indians who won the winning podiums as India’s Mona Agarwal also secured the bronze medal in the Women’s 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 event.
Meanwhile, her contemporary Mona Agarwal gained a bronze medal with a score of 228.7.
After a nail-biting finish, Avani was in second place making a heart-heating competition over her Korean’s Yunri Lee by 0.8 points with only one shot remaining.
At the final round, the dramatic spectacle kept the viewers glued to their seats. Later on, the tension increased as Lekhara faced a significant challenge for reclaiming the gold. Nevertheless, her penultimate shot of 9.9 lost her top position after which it seems Yunri Lee might get the top position.
However, things totally turned upside down as Lee failed to retain her position with a disappointing shot of 6.8, while Avani incredibly hit back with a 10.5 making her top the podium with exceptional glory.
The 22-year-old has now become equal with Devendra Jhajharia’s all-time Paralympic record for India who won two golds and a silver. As Avani now has three Paralympic medals to her name and two of them are gold.
Right after the news of this historical victory came out the Indian entertainment industry showered praises on the young shooter’s achievement.
Bollywood actor Ayushmann Khurrana congratulated the champions via his Instagram story writing,” What an amazing day for India at the Paralympics. Feeling super proud.’’
Moreover, actors like Kareena Kapoor and Jackky Bhagnani also congratulate the gold medalist.
