Lyricist Irshad Kamil who is currently the talk of the town for his amazing songs in Imtiaz Ali’s new film Amar Singh Chamkila starring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra recalled a funny incident behind the making of the songs. Kamil’s collaboration with AR Rahman for this movie comes across as magical especially the song “Tu Kya Jaane” is earning a lot of fame. In a recent interview with News18, the lyricist remembered the story behind making the track. Let’s find out what he has revealed.

Irshad Kamil said AR Rahman held him, hostage, at 2 am for writing a song

Kamil told the outlet, “We had finalised a different song before ‘Tu Kya Jaane’. But after some deliberations, it was felt that the song wasn’t appropriate for the scene in question. It was then that Rahman composed ‘Tu Kya Jaane’. But there’s a funny story behind it. I had gone to meet him for a different reason, and it was well past midnight. He told me to wait. He said, ‘I won’t let you leave before you give me a line or two for the new song’.”

Irshad noted he insisted on writing the song on another day since it’s already 2 am. “Dimaag nahi chal raha (My brain isn’t working),” he said. But Rahman wouldn’t listen as he told “I’m not listening to you. You sit here and give me just one line,” Rahman told Irshad. And so, sitting there, Irshad came up with two or three lines for Rahman, who later went on to credit the writer for coming up with the song in seven minutes.”

Moreover, he recalled another story when Rahman made him write the song “Maahi Ve” from Highway in 15 minutes on New Year’s Eve.

The story of movie Amar Singh Chamkila is based on the real-life story of singer Amar Singh Chamkila who was killed at the age of 27 after facing lots of criticism for writing ‘vulgar’ lyrics even as his fame and fandom grew beyond Punjab and even earned a nickname of Elvis of Punjab.

Diljit Dosanjh playing the titular role gained immense critical recognition and praise for his powerful performance. Moreover, the film also became the highest-rated IMBD movie under director Imtiaz Ali and also got an 8.4 IMBD rating, ruling the Netflix charts becoming the most-watched movie in recent times.
