Island Nation – Sri Lanka approves Pfizer vaccine usage in the country. It becomes the first South Asian country to welcome the Pfizer BioNtech vaccine. However, the vaccine is approved by Sri Lanka foe emergency use only.
The island nation is currently battling through the third wave of COVID-19 infection. Sri Lanka is seeking to acquire other vaccines as the Serum Institute of India, the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer, has restricted the delivery of AstraZeneca’s Covishield vaccine due to increasing coronavirus infections in India. It is facing restricted supply of vaccines from the India. Sri Lanka has also approved Russia’s Sputnik and China’s Sinopharm vaccines for emergency use.
Dr. Sudharshani Fernandopulle, the minister managing the fight against the pandemic, said in a statement the government would place 5 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine.
