A dark day for the golden Hollywood. Legendary actor Donald Sutherland who is notable for his films like Citizen X, Path to War,The Undoing, Pride and Prejudice and, more recently, The Hunger Game took his last breath at the age of 88. On June 20, his son and fellow actor Kiefer Sutherland confirmed the devastating news via his official Instagram account. Apart from Kiefer the late actor is also father to sons Roeg, Rossif, Angus, as well as daughter Rachel. Let’s check out the entire details of this story.
Donald Sutherland reportedly passed away after a long illness
Kiefer announced the news with a black and white picture with his late father writing, “With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived.”
Although The 24 alum didn’t unveil the cause of death, Donald’s agency CAA revealed in a statement to NBC News that a prolonged illness was the cause of his death.
In his long successful career Donald has earned numerous recognition including a Primetime Emmy Award and Golden Globe for Citizen X in 1995, a Golden Globe for Path to War in 2002, and a Critics Choice Award in 2020 for The Undoing. In 2017, he was also given recognition in the honorary Academy Award for his lifetime achievements.
The actor who most recently featured in The Hunger Games franchise alongside Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Woody Harrelson said in a 2014 interview with GQ the reason behind opting for the role.
“Nobody asked me to do it,” Donald told the outlet. “I wasn’t offered it. I like to read scripts, and it captured my passion. I wrote them a letter. The role of the president had maybe a line in the script. Didn’t make any difference. I thought it was an incredibly important film, and I wanted to be a part of it.”
The actor added, “I hadn’t read the books. To be truthful, I was unaware of them. But they showed my letter to the director, Gary Ross, and he thought it’d be a good idea if I did it. He wrote those wonderfully poetic scenes in the rose garden, and they formed the mind and wit of Coriolanus Snow.”
May he rest in peace!
