Vinesh Phogat’s fate is sealed with no medal. After her disqualification ahead of the gold medal bout in the 2024 Paris Olympics the wrestler gave an appeal against the United World Wrestling (UWW) and International Olympic Committee (IOC)  to the Court of Arbitration for Sport  (CAS) about getting a joint silver from the event. She was only 100 grams overweight. However, the disappointment didn’t seem to end as the verdict didn’t come in her favor.

Although Phogat who is still in Paris has been silent about the unfortunate incident, Indian Olympic Association president PT Usha said to be ‘shocked and disappointed’ with the decision. Let’s delve into the entire details of this segment.

IOA president PT Usha on the verdict of CAS

The IOA president PT Usha released a statement to show her disappointment against the decision.

The IOA said in a statement, “The matter involving Vinesh highlights the stringent and, arguably, inhumane regulations that fail to account for the physiological and psychological stresses athletes, particularly female athletes, undergo. It is a stark reminder of the need for more equitable and reasonable standards that prioritize athletes’ well-being.”

The IOA also chose to stand with Phogat after they failed to convince CAS.

They said in the statement, “In light of the order of the CAS, the IOA continues to stand in full support of Ms. Phogat and is exploring further legal options. The IOA is committed to ensuring that Vinesh’s case is heard. It will continue to advocate justice and fairness in sports, ensuring that the rights and dignity of athletes and everyone in the sports fold are upheld at all times.”

Vinesh Phogat’s application of 7 August 2024 is dismissed

Signed by Sole Arbitrator Annabelle Bennett, the verdict states, “The application filed by Vinesh Phogat on 7 August 2024 is dismissed.”

Amid the heated backlash, USA’s Sarah Hildebrandt with whom Vinesh was about to compete for the gold medal eventually became the champion.

To defend her position The UWW body’s president, Nenad Lalovic, said ‘rules are rules.’

The verdict is officially yet to come out on Friday.  According to the rules of CAS, the ad hoc ‘panel shall give a decision within 24 hours of the lodging of the application. In exceptional cases, this time limit may be extended by the President of the ad hoc Division if circumstances so require.’

After two postponements last Saturday, the final decision was ultimately disclosed on Wednesday evening.
