India’s campaign at the 2024 Paris Olympics is over. The country’s journey ended as wrestler Reetika Hooda failed to qualify for the repechage of the women’s 76kg category with a quarter-final match loss. India sent a 117-member contingent to return with six medals from the French capital. The medalist this year includes Manu Bhaker, Sarabjot Singh, Swapnil Kusale, Neeraj Chopra, Aman Sehrawat, and the men’s hockey team. Olympics gold-medalist Neeraj Chopra was satisfied with silver this time while the other four competitors won bronze for the country, with Bhaker grabbing two bronze a single event becoming the first in the history of India Olympics to do so.
However, the medal number might have risen more with weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, Badminton player Lakshya Sen, and Finalist Vinesh Phogat. Unfortunately, the first two Olympians ended in the 4th place and Phogat faced a heartbreaking disqualification for weight fluctuation ahead of the final.
Let’s check out what happened on the 15th day of the prestigious quadrennial event.
Golf
India’s performance at the final round of the women’s golf competition did end victoriously. As Aditi Ashok who ended 4th in 2020, Tokyo finished tied in the 29th position with a total of 290 strokes, and a To Par score of +2. Needless to say, it will be disappointing for the golfer this year after giving a breakthrough performance last time.
Meanwhile, Diksha Dagar’s poor performance led her journey to the 49th position, with a total of 301 strokes and a To Par score of +13. The 23-year-old’s performance is undoubtedly not up to the mark.
Wrestling
India’s Reetika Hooda’s semi-final loss ended the country’s campaign in this year’s Olympics. With her domination in world number 16, in her first bout she gained a marvelous victory with a 12-2 margin by defeating Hungary’s Bernadett Nagy.
However, the Haryana-born wrestler’s marvelous quarterfinal victory tumbled against Kyrgyzstan’s Aiperi Medet Kyzy who is the second-ranked wrestler in the 76kg category.
After the match ended in a tie of 1-1 Kyzy sealed a victory on a countback securing her place in the next round, while Reetika’s journey ended in the quarter-final.
The 21-year-old did not feature in the bronze medal competition.
With six medel India’s journey in the Paris Olympics 2024 has come to an end. We hope next time the medal margin will rise more.
