Day 11 has been a historic day for India in the 2024 Paris Olympics. After back-to-back disappointing losses, the hope for a medal is finally up. Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat gained a magnificent victory in the semis becoming the nation’s first female wrestler to reach an Olympic final. On the other hand, gold-medalist javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra with a record-breaking throw secured a spot in the finals. Although the Indian hockey team didn’t get the ending they wanted, they still had the chance to secure a bronze for the country. Let’s check out the key moments from the 11th day of the magnificent event.
Wrestling
Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat engraved her name in history by becoming the first female wrestler to reach the final of the 50 kg at the Olympics. Phogat defeated Cuba’s Yusneylys Guzman in the semifinal with an impressive 5-0 victory securing the 4th medal for the country.
The glorious wrestler will now compete for the gold medal with USA’s Sarah Hildebrandt at the Champ-de-Mars Arena Mat B on 7th August. Previously, she came into the limelight by bringing a hard loss to the undefeated Yui Susaki of Japan.
Hockey
Despite taking the lead initially, the Indian hockey team faced disappointment in the semis of the Olympics. They were putting a head-to-head challenge to the Germans. However, the match ended with 3-2 making the Germans reach the finals.
However, the hope for a medal is still up as they’ll now fight for the bronze medal against Spain on 8 August.
Javelin throw
Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra reached the final with his style. With a commanding throw of 89.34, he surpassed the automatic qualification mark of 84 meters by a substantial margin. This not only helped him make his way into the finals but also created history as the best throw of the season and the highest among all athletes.
Meanwhile, India’s Kishore Kumar Jena failed with a throw of 80.73 meters and unfortunately ended his campaign in the summer Olympics of this year.
Athletics
Quarter-miler Kiran Pahal finished sixth in Heat 1 with a time of 52.59 seconds in the women’s 400m repechage round missing her chance to secure a spot in the semi-finals.
On the contrary, distance runner Avinash Sable secured a spot in the final of the 3000m Steeplechase creating history by becoming the first Indian to do so.
Table Tennis
The Indian men’s table tennis team, consisting of Sharath Kamal, Harmeet Desai, and Manav Thakkar ended their journey in the 2024 Olympics after facing a hard defeat to the top-seeded Chinese team yesterday. The Indian trio fell to make an attack on the reigning champions from China scoring 0-3.
