Rahul Dravid is taking back his head coach job at the domestic level. The former cricketer who is the mastermind behind India’s T20 World Cup 2024 triumph is taking back the role for the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2025. Needless to say, it’s incredible news for his fans who are currently on a short career break since India’s victory at Barbados in June. As per the sources, the cricket icon will soon start working with the franchise for the making of some vital decisions including player retention ahead of this year’s auction. A source revealed the news of Dravid’s joining
A source close to the development revealed to PTI, “The talks have reached the final stages and he will soon step into the head coach job.”
Meanwhile, Srilankan cricket legend Kumar Sangakkara, who has been Royals’ Director of Cricket since 2021, will also come back for his role. Moreover, Sangakkara is also going to be more caught up with Barbados Royals (CPL) and Paarl Royals (SA20).
This isn’t the first time Dravid who is also known as Mr. Dependable has being a part of this franchisem. Earlier he had a long-standing association with the team as their captain from 2012 to 2013 and later also served as a mentor for two more years.
The former coach of Indian national team moved on from NCA to take up India’s head coach role from Ravi Shastr in 2021. He will also come across the renowned players of the team. In fact, Dravid will also reunite with Sanju Samson who is part of the T20 World Cup team. The wicket-keeper batter is all reportedly going to be retained as RR captain for another season. The 52-year-old has also the first to put Samson’s career in the limelight.
Dravid is also going to reunite with his another colleague as ESPNCricinfo reported that Vikram Rathour who was batting coach of India during Dravid’s tenure is also going to be approached by the franchise as its assistant coach.
It will be really interesting to see how RR will flourish under his guidance since they have not won the IPL title since the inaugural season in 2008.
Later on, their next best finish was in 2022 as runners-up to Gujarat Titans. Despite a terrific start in 2023 they failed to make it into the playoffs that season finishing fifth in the league.
