Reese Witherspoon gives fans a massive surprise. The actress who became her pink-loving Harvard Law student character Elle Woods, an icon in the 2001 film Legally Blonde, has finally announced the sequel but with a little twist. Witherspoon declared a global casting call for the upcoming prequel series about her character’s teen years. On September 25, the actress made the official announcement via her Instagram account. Earlier this year, she confirmed the news to produce the Prime Video series along with her Hello Sunshine production company. Let’s dig into the complete details of this sequel.

the 48-year-old said in a video posted on Instagram, “I can’t wait to tell you that we are starting the casting process, and we are making it open. Yes, that is right. This is an open casting for the young Elle Woods when she was in high school.”
She added, “I cannot wait to see all the Elle Woods’ out there. This is gonna be really fun!”
Previously, she announced that she would produce the Prime Video series along with her Hello Sunshine production company. Moreover, a press release teasing also depicted the iconic character as “a driven, natural born leader who will always stop to straighten another woman’s crown.”
“Elle’s magnetic personality brightens the world with confidence, vulnerability, and an earnestness that charms everyone around her,” the release added. “Coming of age in the 90s Elle will encounter her first love and her first heartbreak, and she will find her moral convictions.”
The first instalment of the movie which originated the iconic role has become a massive box-office success grossing over $141 million at the global box office. Later on, the actress reprised her character for two years in Legally Blonde 2: Red, White, and Blonde. Apart from that, The Oscar winner was also a producer on the direct-to-video spin-off Legally Blondes released in 2009.
In fact, the plans for the first installment was started back in 2018 as Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor become officially signed to write the screenplay in 2020.
Even Reese also gave a small update on the long-awaited sequel, by saying, “Mindy and I are really working hard on, actually, a lot of things together.”
