Rickey Smiley is opening up about the sudden death of his and his ex Brenda Morris’s son Brandon. He was only 32 years old at that time. On the March 2 episode of Today Smiley revealed how he is coping up with this huge loss. He opened up about the possible cause of death of his son.
Rickey Smiley said he was struggling with that
The 54-year-old said substance use could have been the cause of Brandon’s death. However, he hasn’t confirmed it yet. He said, “He was struggling with that. His mother and I made several attempts to try and send him to get the help he needed, send him to rehab. And we thought that he was doing better.”
The radio personality continues, “We haven’t got a toxicology report yet. But this is just what we are speculating, according to his girlfriend who found him unresponsive.”
Moreover, The Rickey Smiley Morning Show host shares a message with those that may need help with substance use. He said, “We have to have a conversation. I think the parents are having the conversation. The problem is getting the kids to listen to these conversations.”
Later on, he talked about his son’s great sense of humor as he was “always the leader” and “always the prankster.”
He announced this devastating news in an Instagram video. He captioned it writing, “I lost my oldest son #BrandonSmiley this morning. I’m okay, but please pray for my son’s mother Brenda, his siblings, and his daughter Storm.”
He said in the video,”I’m OK. Pray for my son’s mother and my son’s siblings.”
Moreover, he continued, “Now I see what my granddaddy went through and why he felt the way he felt. My granddaddy went through this s–t with my dad and somehow, here I am going through the same thing my grandparents went through. So just pray for our family.”
