Heartbreak is making Shakira stronger. Prior to the release of her first studio album in seven years, the “Hips Don’t Lie” opened up about how her musical journey was affected by her relationship with ex Gerard Piqué. On March 6, during an interview with the Times of London newspaper, the singer reflected on her personal life. Shakira and Piqué parted ways in 2021 with whom she shares sons Milan, 11, and Sasha, 9, announced their split in June 2022 after 11 years together. Let’s check out what she has revealed.
Shakira said she put her career on hold
The 47-year-old told the outlet, “For a long time I put my career on hold, to be next to Gerard, so he could play football,There was a lot of sacrifice for love.”
“There were so many pieces of my life that crumbled in front of my eyes and I had to rebuild myself in a way, picking up the bones from the floor and putting them all together,” Shakira shared. “And the glue that kept it all together was music.”
The couple who parted ways after 11 years together and five months before the star athlete retired from professional football career. Afterwards the mother of two released numerous singles which will be featured on her upcoming album, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran. The record which will drop on March 22 is tittle “Women No Longer Cry,” in English.
Although she continued to release new singles she hasn’t launched any toure since 2018. For now she is putting the hold aside by continuously performing a joint 2020 Super Bowl Halftime Show with Jennifer Lopez and a magnificent solo performance at the 2023 MTV VMAs.
Moreover, the singer revealed that her new album represents “the transformation of pain into creativity, frustration into productivity, anger into passion, vulnerability into resilience.”
This isn’t the first time the singer expressed her emotions through her song. Previously, in 2023 track “BZRP Music Session #53,” she revealed her heartbreak and spirit two weeks before Gerard and Clara Chia Marti made their romance Instagram official.
The Spanish lyrics translated to English: “A she-wolf like me isn’t for guys like you, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh / For guys like you, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh / I was out of your league, that’s why you’re / With someone just like you, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh.”
Talking about how her kids take it she said, “They know that there’s only one way to live life and it’s accepting the pain. And each one of us has different ways of doing that.”
Moreover, her son Milan is following in his mother’s footsteps as she shared, “When his father and I were going through separation, he wrote two amazing songs, the kind that will bring you to tears.”
