There are people who aren’t totally awed by 2023’s blockbuster movie ‘Barbie’ and pop sensation Shakira is one of them. Being mother of two boys Milan, 11, and Sasha, 9, whom she shares with her ex, Gerard Piqué says the Greta Gerwig directorial hadn’t left any positive impact on her. In a new interview with Allure, the Colombian superstar noted that although she is in favour of women’s empowerment the way the movie diminishes men’s identity isn’t totally right. Let’s find out her views on the movie.

Shakira says her sons felt that the movie was emasculating

The 47-year-old told the outlet, “My sons absolutely hated it, They felt that it was emasculating. And I agree, to a certain extent. I’m raising two boys. I want ’em to feel powerful too [while] respecting women. I like pop culture when it attempts to empower women without robbing men of their possibility to be men, to also protect and provide.”

Despite the pop star’s remonstration  ‘Barbie’ became one of the highest-grossing films of 2023 and the highest grossing film ever directed by a female director. Apart from that the Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera starring film grabbed numerous nods including an Oscar for the Billie Eilish song, “What Was I Made For?”

Moreover, the ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ singer went on to explain her perspective on women’s empowerment as she added,”I believe in giving women all the tools and the trust that we can do it all without losing our essence, without losing our femininity. I think that men have a purpose in society and women have another purpose as well. We complement each other, and that complement should not be lost.”

“Just because a woman can do it all doesn’t mean she should. Why not share the load with people who deserve to carry it, who have a duty to carry it as well?” She explained.

Meanwhile, the singer also shared some insights on her new album Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran (Women No Longer Cry).

She noted, “I want this music to build bridges, to empower people, to help women discover their own strengths.”

The new album is the depiction of the emotional turmoil and courage to stand on her feet again during her painful separation with the Spanish footballer.
