The latest installment of the Minions movie, Minions: The Rise of Gru broke box office records over the holiday weekend. According to Universal Studios, the film made around $125 million in the United States over its opening weekend. With this, the film marks the biggest opening over the 4th of July weekend. The movie overtook the record from Transformers: Dark of the Moon, which made around $115 million in the year 2011.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, parents are still hesitant to take their kids to movie theatres. Family-friendly movies such as Sonic the Hedgehog 2 proved to be a success at the box office. However, last month, Disney and Pixar’s Lightyear miserably flopped at the box office. “Minions: The Rise of Gru” proved that families want to go to movie theatres, only if it’s the right film, said Universal’s president of domestic theatrical distribution. He further added that families want the social event of it all.

The critics love it

“Minions” received several good reviews from critics and currently holds a Rotten Tomatoes score of 71%. To date, The Despicable Me franchise has made roughly around $4 billion worldwide. On TikTok, a trend of film-goers dressing up in formal wear to see the film is also going viral. Originally, the movie was supposed to be released in 2020. However, the pandemic delayed the release. Other family-friendly movies decided to go the streaming route, Universal Studios kept “Minions” for the theatres.

A critic praised the film saying, “A knockout performance by ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ may not have been guaranteed, given the less-than-stellar results for some recent family films,” He further added, “But the undeniable appeal of those silly Minions contained in a perfectly executed movie-theater-only confection was pure cinematic catnip for kids and parents.” On 7 July 2022, the much anticipated Marvel movie, “Thor: Love and Thunder” will be released in theatres worldwide.
