After engraving her name in history by becoming the first female wrestler to reach the final of the Olympics Vinesh Phogat faced a heartbreaking disqualification ahead of the gold medal match. Giving an incredible performance in the semis by defeating Cuba’s Yusneylys Guzman with an impressive 5-0, this news came as a huge shock for the Indian fans. On August 12 she was to have a competition against America’s Sarah Hildebrandt. Let’s check out the reason for her disqualification.
Vinesh Phogat’s reason for disqualification
The 29-year-old wrestler was a part of the Women’s Wrestling 50 kg category where she already secured a silver for India after her victory in the semis. However, with the unexpected turn of events, Phogat will now return empty-handedly from Paris after being found overweight ahead of her women’s 50kg final.
Although trying immensely hard overnight to lose the extra kilos, the ace wrestler’s journey ended because of a few extra grams. She was found overweight by 100gm this morning due to the rules of the Olympics she turned down the competition.
After the news went out the Indian Olympic Association also shared their condolences to the talented wrestler in an official statement.
They shared, “It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the women’s Wrestling 50kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning.”
Moreover, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also sent strength and support to the unlucky ace wrestler with a large consolation post in his X.
The PM said of the wrestler, “Vinesh, you are a champion among champions! You are India’s pride and an inspiration for each and every Indian. Today’s setback hurts. I wish words could express the sense of despair that I am experiencing. At the same time, I know that you epitomize resilience. It has always been your nature to take challenges head-on. Come back stronger! We are all rooting for you.”
As per the sources, her team has requested the Olympic Federation to give her some more time to put off the extra 100 grams but due to the official rules she has no option than back off from the game
Nevertheless, Vinesh Phogat is undoubtedly a pride of India and we are sure that she will come stronger next time.
