Malala Yousafzai – Nobel Peace Prize winner and activist has recently tied the knot with Asser Malik, a Pakistani Cricket Board official an Islamic ceremony in Birmingham.
The couple took part in a nikkah ceremony, where the bride and groom consent to be married. Malala said it was “a precious day” in her life.
After getting shot in the head by the Taliban in 2012, the 24-year-old activist found refuge in the West Midlands
On Tuesday she shared the news of a “small nikkah ceremony with family” and tweeted “Asser and I tied the knot to be partners for life”.
Furthermore, she added: “We are excited to walk together for the journey ahead”.
Malala was 15 when she was besieged by the Taliban in Pakistan when she stood for the right of girls to be educated.
In addition to this, Malala also survived an assault in which a militant boarded her school bus in north-western Swat valley and opened fire. This act wounded Malala along with two of her school friends.
Later, when she recovered from her near-fatal injuries, her family relocated to Birmingham, which she calls “a second home”.
At the age of 17, Malala became the first person to win the Nobel Peace Prize. She also went on to study at Oxford University, and become a leading human rights campaigner.
Ever since she graduated, Malala has called for better support for Afghan refugees, signed a contract with Apple TV+ to produce documentaries.
Moreover, she also appeared on the cover of British Vogue while she was working to improve girls’ access to education.
Asser Malik is closely linked with cricket and is the High-Performance General Manager of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). He graduated from Lahore’s renowned Aitchison College and then Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS).
Apart from that, he was also associated with the Pakistan Super League franchise Multan Sultans before joining the PCB, for which he prepared the player development program.
However, it is still not clear how long the couple have known each other. But there are pictures of them cheering on Pakistan at Birmingham’s Edgbaston Cricket Ground posted on Mr Malik’s Instagram account in June 2019.
