‘Gladiator II’ is all set to grace our screen soon. The upcoming sequel to the 2000 iconic film features the Aftersun star as Lucius Verus, the nephew of Commodus, the patricidal traitor-turned-emperor which is previously played by Joaquin Phoenix. On 9th July Tuesday the makers officially unveiled the trailer of the movie.
The story revolves around Verus who is living on his own after years of being away from the Roman Empire and his mother, Lucilla (Connie Nielsen). He is brought back to Rome to enter the Colosseum himself. Therefore, he thrives to follow the footsteps of his childhood hero, Maximus, previously played by Russell Crowe who even won the Best Actor Oscar back in 2001. The trailer shows that Lucius wants revenge on the entire Roman army
Coming back on screen after twenty three long years the trailer shows despite growing up far removed from his royal Roman roots Lucius still remember the day Maximus took revenge against Commodus.
Therefore, the scene shifts to Macrinus (Denzel Washington), a wealthy arms dealer who conscripts Lucius into his stable of gladiators, saying to him, “That rage is your gift.”
Lucius also seeks vengeance against”the entire Roman army,” but given the impossibility of that, he admits, “the general will do.”
After that we get the glimpse of the general Marcus Acacius played by Pedro Pascal) who tends to be the exact thing Lucius said about the. Marcus also had training under Maximus. The pair first face each other when Marcus led the Roman army to take Numidia which is the region of northern Africa the place where Lucilla sent Lucius as a boy. The duo get engaged in a deadly combat.
Ridley Scott is also making his comeback as the director of this movie.
Mescal previously shared his excitement on being a part of this project in an interview with Entertainment Tonight.
“There’s not a lot of films that have done that, especially in this genre,” he shared. “So there’s a healthy amount of pressure, but also a healthy amount of confidence from the people that made the film. We are excited to kind of add the next installment to a film that has been and will continue to be incredibly popular.”
Gladiator II is set to hit the theatres on Nov. 22.
