Miley Cyrus is now in serious legal trouble. The Grammy winner, who got numerous recognitions for her single “Flowers,” is blamed for copying a Bruno Mars song for this song. As per the official documents Cyrus was accused of plagiarizing Mars’s 2013 song “When I Was Your Man.” On September 16 a lawsuit was filed against the singer and co-writers Gregory Hein and Michael Pollack by Tempo Music Investments. It has taken a dig at the other entertainment companies for distributing “Flowers.” Let’s dig into all the facts of this segment.
The details of the court documents of the lawsuit against Miley Cyrus
The documents alleged the Grammy winner, “Any fan of Bruno Mars’ ‘When I Was Your Man’ knows that Miley Cyrus’ ‘Flowers’ did not achieve all of that success on its own. Flowers’ duplicates numerous melodic, harmonic, and lyrical elements of ‘When I Was Your Man,’ including the melodic pitch design and sequence of the verse, the connecting bass-line, certain bars of the chorus, certain theatrical music elements, lyric elements, and specific chord progressions.”
Moreover, it noted, “It is undeniable based on the combination and number of similarities between the two recordings that ‘Flowers’ would not exist without ‘When I Was Your Man. Accordingly, Plaintiff brings this action for copyright infringement arising out of Defendants’ unauthorized reproduction, distribution, and exploitation of ‘When I Was Your Man.'”
With the uncanny similarities in the melody and harmony of the choruses of the songs, Cyrus’ chorus “clearly have a meaningful connection to the lyrics” of Mars’ and also the documents explained the “musical similarities are no coincidence.”
The lawsuit is filed seven months after Cyrus achieved her first two Grammys for the Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance, for “Flowers.”
Ahead of the victory, the former Disney star shared the background of the popular single.
In an interview with British Vogue last year she shared, “I wrote it in a really different way. The chorus was originally: ‘I can buy myself flowers, write my name in the sand, but I can’t love me better than you can.’ It used to be more like the 1950s. The saddest song. Like: ‘Sure, I can be my own lover, but you’re so much better.’”
