Elton John provided how worthy he is of being called a legend. On January 15th at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards the legendary singer became the 24th person ever to achieve the feat the EGOT Status. John got the title after winning an Emmy for Outstanding Variety Special (Live) for his Disney+ show, Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium. On top of that, it also marked his final North American show which is part of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour. Keep reading to find out the entire details.
Elton John said his recognition is a testament to the passion and dedication of everyone involved
The 76-year-old said of the award in a statement to Entertainment Tonight, “I am incredibly humbled to be joining the unbelievably talented group of EGOT winners tonight. The journey to this moment has been filled with passion, dedication, and the unwavering support of my fans all around the world. Tonight is a testament to the power of the arts and the joy that it brings to all our lives. Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout my career, I am incredibly grateful.”
The “Tiny Dancer” singer continued the statement, “this recognition is a testament to the passion and dedication of everyone involved, and I am so deeply grateful.”
Although Elton didn’t attend the event in person, the partner at the England-based production company Fulwell 73, Ben Wilso accepted the award on his behalf. Addressing Wilso said the cause of John’s not being able to present at the event was a knee operation. However, the singer is fine right now.
“We knew this show would be historic because it was going to be Elton’s last-ever show in North America on tour, We knew it would be historic because it was Disney’s first-ever live global stream. We didn’t know it was going to be historic because it was going to win a man who created the soundtrack to all of our lives. We didn’t know it was going to win him an EGOT. Thank you so much. We are so grateful,” Wilson said.
The EGOT status was last achieved by singer Viola Davis in 2023.
The 75th Primetime Emmy Awards was supposed to be held last September but got postponed due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. However, it eventually graced our screens Monday, Jan. 15 at 5 p.m. to PT, 8 p.m.
