Law & Order: SVU Star Richard Belzer Passed Away at 78

Hollywood faces another loss. Actor Richard Belzer who is best known for his role as detective John Munch on NBC shows Homicide: Life on the Street and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit passed away on February 18. He was at his home in Bozouls in southwest France at the time of his death. He was 78 years old. NBC and Universal Television issued a statement honoring the late actor. Moreover, his longtime friend French writer Bill Scheft revealed his last words.

Scheft Said Richard Belzer had lots of health issues

The late actor’s longtime friend French writer Bill Scheft said in a statement to Hollywood Reporter that he had lots of health issues. Moreover, his last words were, ‘F–k you, motherf–ker.'”

NBC and Universal Television also issued a statement honoring the late actor. The statement says, “Anyone who ever had the pleasure of watching Richard Belzer portray Det. John Munch—whether on Homicide or Law & Order: SVU—over four decades will never forget how much he inhabited that beloved character to make it his own,” it read. “His professionalism, talents and dedication to the craft made him a pillar in the industry, but it was his humor, compassion and loving heart that made him family.”

Later on, it added, “Our condolences go out to his loved ones as we join them in mourning his loss, but also in celebrating his memory.”

Belzer’s third wife, actress Harlee McBride, and stepdaughters Jessica and Bree were there by his side. Talking about his early life, he was born in 1944 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Moreover, his career started as a stand-up comedian in New York City. He became notable for the first season of Saturday Night Live. He also took part in the Channel One comedy group that parodied TV shows. He made his onscreen debut by the  1974 film The Groove Tube.
