Hypertension, often known as high blood pressure is a dangerous condition that is now very common in millions of people across the globe.

When the blood pressure against the wall of arteries rises to a dangerous level it leads to high blood pressure.  This condition over time can damage the heart and cause heart problems such as stroke and heart attacks.

Once detected, it should not be left untreated, or it could turn to be fatal. Here are some ways you can control your blood pressure.

Sodium intake

Numerous studies have proven high blood pressure to be linked with excess sodium intake. It can also be a reason for stroke.

However, the effects of sodium intake vary from person to person. Still, people should limit the consumption of salty processed foods to stay healthy.

Potassium intake

For people suffering from high blood pressure, Potassium is an important nutrient. It is required by the body in small quantities to get rid of excess sodium.

In order to cut down the sodium consumed; you need to add potassium-rich food to your diet such as:

  • Vegetables – leafy greens, tomatoes, potatoes and sweet potatoes
  • Fruit – Melons, bananas, avocados, oranges and apricots
  • Others – Nuts and seeds, milk, yogurt, tuna and salmon

Daily exercise

Exercising regularly is very important for each and every individual.

Studies suggest that exercising regularly can make your heart stronger, help them pump blood more efficiently and lower the pressure on arteries.

Reduce alcohol intake and quit smoking

Both of these bad habits can lead to high blood pressure and damage the blood vessels. Since both things are known to harm your health, it is better to quit them once for good.

Cut down refined carbs

According to recent reports refined carbs and added sugar in food items can also contribute to high blood pressure. Hence, a reduction in their intake can help to manage the level of blood pressure naturally.

Foods like bread and white sugar convert rapidly to sugar in your bloodstream and may cause problems. Instead, use jaggery or honey – these are much better options.
