Penn Badgley is grateful to ex-Blake Lively. The actor who is in lots of limelight for his popular Netflix series ‘You’ opened up about his relationship with Blake. The duo even played each other’s love interest in the Gossip Girl series. Lively’s character Serena van der Woodsen is in an on-again-off-again relationship with Badgley’s character Dan Humphrey. Later on, in 2010, their on-screen romance become off-screen as well. However, they broke up in 2007. In an interview with Variety, the actor unveiled lots of facts.
Penn Badgley never struggle with substances thanks to ex-Blake
The 36-year-old told to Variety, “Beyond our relationship. I don’t think anybody was going to be interested in me publicly.”
As he reflected on the show’s six-season run he revealed being in the spotlight isn’t as nice as it looks. He revealed himself to be both “fun and fast-paced” during those years as well as dealing with a “dark undercurrent that would bottom out in my later 20s.”
However, Penn’s ex-girlfriend Blake was only a good influence on him. As he said, “To be honest, I never struggled with substance. Blake didn’t drink, and I think our relationship in some ways saved me from forcing myself to go down that road.”
Later on, he added, “Like anybody who experiences some degree of fame and wealth. I was presented with the universal truth that not only does it not make your life better or easier, it actually can greatly complicate things, and make you quite unhappy.”
Badgley continues, “I was never anything that I would define as suicidal at all, but I was certainly in a despair. It had to do with ‘Do I matter? Do I matter? Does anything matter?’ These questions do inform how we feel. The answer that I came upon was ‘Yes.’ I think we all have to come to that. I don’t know how you could come to ‘No’ and be happy, so we all have to come to that ‘Yes’ somehow. Probably repeatedly.”
