BTS’ Jin performed his new solo single “The Astronaut” live for the first time alongside Coldplay at the band’s concert in Argentina on Friday (Oct. 28) Big Hit Music confirmed earlier this week on BTS’ Weverse page that the K-pop star would perform at Buenos Aires’ River Plate stadium during Chris Martin and co.’s Music of the Spheres tour stop. Friday’s sold-out performance, which came just hours after “The Astronaut” became available on streaming services, was broadcast live across 3,5000 movie theatres in over 80 countries. “The Astronaut,” co-written by Jin and Coldplay, reveals Coldplay’s stadium-sized rock sound as a perfect bed for Jin’s steady, soothing vocals. Coldplay’s Martin told the roaring South American crowd the story of the new single’s origins prior to its live debut.

About six months ago, one of [BTS’] members called and said, ‘I have to leave the band in December for two years to join the army in Korea because that’s the rules there,'” Martin explained from behind his piano. “And he said, ‘I need a song that says goodbye to everyone for a little while and tells them how much I love them.’ So I said, ‘All right, let’s do a song together. ‘Instead of being concerned, I am ecstatic about it, and I am grateful for our relationship with BTS. Then came this song, and I was told, ‘This is one of our best songs; let’s give it to this gentleman.'”

Coldplay previously worked with BTS on the single “My Universe” for the latter’s 2021 album, Music of the Spheres. The song debuted at the top of the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the first Hot 100 No. 1 by two different groups on the same song.
